How did it all start, a brief history of Feng Office

Feng Office (under the name OpenGoo) started as a degree project at the faculty of Engineering of the University of the Republic, Uruguay. The project was presented and championed by Software Engineer Conrado Viña. Software Engineers Marcos Saiz and Ignacio de Soto developed the first prototype as their thesis. Professors Eduardo Fernández and Tomás Laurenzo served as tutors. Conrado, Ignacio and Marcos founded the OpenGoo community and remain active members and core developers. The thesis was approved with the highest score.

Why Feng Office – the key features?

Although the technology for many applications needed by Small Businesses (Document Managment, Project Management, Customer Management) was mature enough, we realized businesses still couldn’t access it, because of one main factor: total cost of ownership. Total cost of ownership was comprised by the individual cost of each software package (licenses), installation and set-up fees, and support and maintenance for each package. Not only that, but the business would en up with un-integrated solutions, which in itselfs adds integration costs (wether the integration is manual work, or custom software integration).

Integration among CRM, Project Management, and Document Management applications is a natural business need. We solved the problem by developing a standard package that integrates those applications into a single one. We also got rid of licensing costs and most of the installation costs.

How has been the feedback so far for Feng Office

The feedback has been tremendous and most inspiring. We have received, literally, thousands of positive reviews. There have been a few negative reviews, from which we strive to learn and to improve.

The climate at the community is of great enthusiasm. Almost daily people thanks and congratulates the team at the forum. That makes us very proud and cheers us up a lot.

Hardest challenge the Feng Office team had to face so far

Marketing and finance management. The founders’ original background is strongly on Engineering. We have been very lucky to have professionals with these backgrounds join the team, but we still have to learn a lot of this stuff on a daily basis.

If you could start over again from scratch, what would you do differently

Hum. Very good question. Right now I am thinking we should have done an effort to position OpenGoo -not Feng Office- differently. But those thoughts change frequently. In terms of the technology used and the vision for the solution, we are very confident on the choices we have made.

You will need a MySQL user account which has permissions to create new tables within a database.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Here, I’m test installing Form Tools on localhost using XAMPP (an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use – just download, extract and start). Before proceeding, you need to create a new MySQL database for Form Tools using your preferred database administration tool like phpMyAdmin.

Step1

Download the Form Tools zip file from the downloads page and unzip the files into a folder on your computer.

Step2

With an FTP client, upload the files to your web server. This folder must be accessible via a URL on your website, For instance, http://www.yoursite.com/formtools/

Step3

Open the installation script in your browser. This is found in the /install subfolder the location where you installed it, e.g.http://www.yoursite.com/formtools/install/. If all went good, you should see a page similar to the following screenshot. Just select your language and click on ‘Continue’.

System Check

This page runs a few tests on your system to ensure it’s able to run Form Tools. If everything is fine, you should see PASS next to every variable. To proceed further click on ‘Continue’.

Step4

Creating Database Tables

Here we need to create the Form Tools database tables. You should have already created your database as mentioned above.

Creating config.php file

Form Tools stores your server and database settings in this file. Click the “Create File” button to automatically generate the file on your server. You might want to read more about the config.php file here.

Step5

Creating Admin Account

Here, you are going to create an administrator account. This account is used for managing all aspects of Form Tools, such as adding forms and creating client accounts etc.

Note: Before you log in, you must delete the /install/ folder on your server. You will not be allowed to log in until it has been removed.

Dashboard

Once you login as administrator, you can create multiple accounts for your clients. Permissions for each client, either view / edit can be set according to your needs.

Form Tools provides extensive control for form management. Each form can be on different websites and can be controlled by multiple users. You can change the field sizes and data types of variables in the forms as per your requirement.

Apart from the above, you can download the submissions or entries of each form as HTML, CSV, MS Ecel or XML format. The entries can be printed in a friendly manner, either one-by-one or one submission per page. It also allows you to configure emails to be sent whenever a form is submitted.

Conclusion

Form Tools is a prolific script for form processing, storage and data access.  Its key features include form management by multiple users, data export and printer friendly pages. Its free, easy to install and use.

Step by Step Installation Guide

Here, I’m test installing Opengoo on localhost using XAMPP (an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use – just download, extract and start.).

Before installing OpenGoo make sure that your server matches these requirements:

• OpenGoo needs PHP5, not PHP4. If your server is running PHP4 you will get an error message during the installation process saying: Installation error: in order to run OpenGoo you need PHP5. Your current PHP version is: 4.x.x.
• OpenGoo consumes about 10 MB of memory. If your server is set to the standard memory limit of 8 MB you may get an error message during the installation process saying: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted. This can be solved by setting memory_limit=32 in php.ini.
• OpenGoo nees a MySQL database server with InnoDB support.

Installation

• Download OpenGoo from Opengoo.org.
• Unpack the downloaded archive on your local harddrive and upload the files to your web server using an FTP client like FileZilla.
• Create a new MySQL database for OpenGoo using your preferred database administration tool like phpMyAdmin.
• Direct your browser to http://www.yourdomain.com/some_directory/opengoo/public/install and follow the installation procedure.

Step1

The installation wizard should look as follows,

To proceed, click the “Next” button.

Step 2

Now the installer checks your web server environment for,

• The PHP version installed (must be version 5.x)
• Some necessary PHP extensions and the access rights  (writable) of some directories within the OpenGoo installation folder

If you get green messages as shown in the screenshot above then everything should be fine. Click the “Next” button to proceed.

Step 3

Here you enter the parameters of the MySQL database where OpenGoo will store its data.

Step 4

This step is to tell you what happened during the installation process and that Opengoo has been installed successfully.

Click the “Finish” button to quit the installer.

Creating an admin user

Right after the installer quits you are prompted to create a user account with administration privileges for your new OpenGoo installation.

Note: Please note down the username and the password of this account.  Without this information you won’t be able to log into your OpenGoo installation.

To create more user accounts, you can use the administration panel within OpenGoo.

The company name you enter here is the owner company of your OpenGoo installation. This can be an organization or a group of people as well. You can change this fields later if necessary.

Dashboard

The dashboard would be your one stop place to manage your personal notes, tasks, documents and workspaces. You can share events, links, documents etc. with other people and assign specific tasks to team members. Opengoo in short, is a perfect solution for every organization to create, collaborate, share and publish all its internal and external documents.

OpenGoo has plenty of competition in this field among the most powerful being Google Docs,  Zoho, WebEx WebOffice, ThinkFree, Microsoft Ofifce Live Workspace  (not to mention the omni-present Microsoft Office, desktop version and OpenOffice, the open-source desktop application).

JobberBase is an Open Source job board software written in PHP/MySQL. It’s a great web software for adding a simple job board to your existing website. You can check out a demo instance of JobberBase here. A couple of noted websites using JobberBase are jobjob and ecommjobs but you can check also www.jobber.ro out of which jobberBase was born (a popular Romanian IT job board).

jobberBase is a great solution for single-industry recruitment, for job boards focusing on one niche.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Note: Before starting, make sure you have PHP 5+ and MySQL 4.1+ installed on your server. Also, Apache module mod_rewrite has to be enabled and overriding default settings with .htaccess need to be allowed.

Step1: Download the latest version from jobberBase.com and decompress it.

Step2: Create a new database and import __db/jobberbase.sql into it.

Here, I’m test installing JobberBase on localhost using XAMPP (an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use – just download, extract and start.).

In order to accomplish Step2, we need to create a new database ( example: jobberbase ) and import the above mentioned. sql file (which will be located in the db folder ) into it.

Once you have imported the jobberbase.sql file successfully, you should see the following screen on PhpMyAdmin (a MySQL database management tool).

Step3: Open config.php (which will be located in the jobberbase/app directory) and change the values of the following constants to suit your environment:

• DB_HOST – the URL/IP of the machine where the database is hosted.
• DB_USER- the database username.
• DB_PASS- the database password.
• DB_NAME – make sure it’s the same name as the one you have created in Step2.
• NOTIFY_EMAIL- Your Email ID
• ADMIN_EMAIL
• SITE_NAME- desired site name.

You can choose your favorite text editor to make the necessary changes. Once you are done with the changes, the config.php file should look like,

Note:  To find out your database host, either ask your hosting company or login to phpmyadmin and you should have somewhere in the upper area the string Server and next to it an URL or IP. That’s what you should put as database host.

Step4: Upload the content of the app folder to your server.

Step5: Make sure that the following folders have write permission:

• /uploads (uploaded resumes are temporarily stored here)
• /_templates/_cache (smarty cache)
• /admin/_templates/_cache (smarty cache)

Now, open up a browser and type in your site’s URL.

Changing the default admin password

The default admin password is admin. In order to change the default password,  go-to the admin login page at http://yourdomainname.com/admin (in my case it is http://localhost/jobberbase/admin), login with the default username admin and password admin, then on the top right click ‘Change your password’.

The Statistics

Assuming your URL is http://localhost/jobberbase/, the website statistics can be accessed at http://localhost/jobberbase/stats/. However, you might even go for services like Google Analytics or StatCounter to track your visitors (or you can use your web hosting company statistics software which almost any web hosting company offers – AWStats or Webalizer being some of them).

Customizing the Logo and Layout of the Site

Go to your root folder from localhost (for testing versions) or ftp location on your server and find the logo file usually located in “../jobberbase/img/jobber-logo.gif” where jobberbase is the name of your site domain folder which will be different for you depending what you name you gave for the folder “app” during installation.

A couple of things you can do:

1. Replace the original logo file with your custom file but do not change the file name or extension (.gif).

2. Open the screen.css (found in the “../templates/css” folder) file with your favorite text editor  and look for this line:

In computing, platform virtualization is a term that refers to the abstraction of computer resources. Virtualization hides the physical characteristics of computing resources from their users, be they applications, or end users. The term has been widely used since the 1960s.

Platform virtualization is performed on a given hardware platform by host software (a control program), which creates a simulated computer environment, a virtual machine, for its guest software. The guest software, which is often itself a complete operating system, runs just as if it were installed on a stand-alone hardware platform. Typically, many such virtual machines are simulated on a single physical machine, their number limited only by the host’s hardware resources. Typically there is no requirement for a guest OS to be the same as the host one. Core offerings include: automated system management, pre-packaged and re-usable components, service expertise and best practices.They have different pricing plans, including a free one.

  Animoto, Tunecore, ForeclosureRadar, iWidgets, Wexas, G.ho.st, Genuitec, Neulio, and ELC Technologies are some of their customers.

• KVM
  KVM (for Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is a full virtualization solution for Linux on x86 hardware containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V). It consists of a loadable kernel module, kvm.ko, that provides the core virtualization infrastructure and a processor specific module, kvm-intel.ko or kvm-amd.ko. KVM also requires a modified QEMU although work is underway to get the required changes upstream. Using KVM, one can run multiple virtual machines running unmodified Linux or Windows images. Each virtual machine has private virtualized hardware: a network card, disk, graphics adapter, etc.
