OpenX 2.8 – an even better version of this free ad server software

The advertising market might have taken a hit these months but that doesn't stop developers improving the advertising software they built so far. 
One of these developers is OpenX and they just launched a new version of their popular AND free ad server software: the version 2.8.
We have reviewed this open source ad server software some time ago (when it was at the version 2.4) and we found it pretty compelling and easy to use (the review is here ).
Now, with this new release , OpenX is pushing forward to more features like the new plugin framework which allows you to customize OpenX in any way you want (built your own plugins, use third party plugins or have an OpenX consultant do it for you – just like Wordpress).
A new feature OpenX introduced was the OpenX Market Plugin which allows you to flow your inventory directly into OpenX Market to maximize your revenue. This Market is now integrated natively in the ad server software.

The scalability of the software wasn't forgotten: raw data storage has been overhauled by a re-architected distributed statistics technology (bucket logging) to provide significantly improved scalability and reduced storage requirements.

AxCMS.net, the free enterprise web content management system, now at version 8.5

If Zimplit was one of the simplest content management systems (see the next post below) around and it's open-source PHP based, AxCMS.net isn't among the simplest and is not open-source based.
But is has one thing in common with Zimplit: it's free.
AxCMS.net is Microsoft .NET technology based and you would expect to cost some money. Well, it's not.
Since 2001 it had 8 major releases and now it's at the version 8.5, Axinom being the developer and providing also the funding.

According to Axinom, AxCMS.net web content management system is a high end solution, for websites in a price range of 5.000 to 500.000 USD…which, basically, rules out the part time web developer used to built websites in Wordpress .
Axinom , the company, has offices in UK, Germany (the headquarter), Estonia (the developers playground), Switzerland (the money vault) and, of course, USA.
It has a worldwide network of partners (plannig to have over 200 this year) and it is Microsoft Gold Certified Partner and International Microsoft Vendor.

Web conferencing platform DimDim exits beta and release source code

Dimdim , the world's open source web conferencing company, today launched its new Dimdim 4.5 edition and simultaneously released the complete source code to the open source community.
With this release, Dimdim officially exits its beta phase while introducing significant new customer-requested features designed to enable businesses, organizations and consumers to cut the costs of their expensive legacy conferencing products while enjoying improved performance, openness and ease of use.
So, if you pay for WebEx conferencing software (or other software like this) now it's a good time to take a look at DimDim. After all, this isn't the best economic times we've seen so cutting costs where we can should be a priority for all of us.
Dimdim also introduced the new SynchroLive Communication Platform that automatically scales its performance to ensure all live communications are synchronized; whether sharing the desktop, webcam, PowerPoint, whiteboard or web pages. The team behind Elgg, the free open source social networking software, launches themes option

The interface for Elgg v1.0, the free open source social networking platform, underwent a radical overhaul due to the overwhelming users request for theming .
The team has created two basic themes to help those interested in theming get to grips with the components of an Elgg theme. Check them out here !
Elgg themes are developed as plugins which makes them distributable, customizable and powerful (they can also be enabled and disabled easily).

Elgg is a pretty new free open source social networking software and recently they launched its first version 1.0. It competes with a plethora of other free social networking platforms like Dolphin , PHPFox , PHPizabi , AroundME , Wordpress MU+Buddypress and others.
It is PHP/MySQL built and it seems it's gaining momentum in this crowded space.
