OpenX, Ad Server Software, Version 2.8.2 Released

OpenX, one of the popular ad server software’s (mentioned here) has recently announced its new version 2.8.2. Briefly, OpenX is a free open source ad server software downloadable and installable on your server.
OpenX let you choose banners, campaigns and terms that fits you best. It has a sophisticated tracking system which lets you gather statistics and optimize the results. It enables you to take effective control of your advertising without having to spend much.
Release notes
- Improvements to ad delivery: With OpenX 2.8.2, a number of changes to the delivery engine have been made to ensure the proper allocation of ads across contract campaigns. The resulting improvements will reduce the occurrence of under-delivery and over-delivery for all contract campaigns. This includes significant changes to maintenance as well as improvements to delivery.
- Improvements to campaigns using companion positioning: Prior to this new release, once a “companion” campaign served one ad on a page, it prevented any other campaigns from serving ads on the page, regardless of whether the companion campaign could fill all of the pages and ads itself. In OpenX 2.8.2, this behavior has been fixed, so if there are ads on the page that the companion campaign is unable to serve, they will be offered to other campaigns. This helps you to avoid serving blanks.
- Security updates: The OpenX team has completed a number of critical security updates to the ad server in OpenX 2.8.2 to reduce any potential vulnerabilities in the software.
- Resolution of a variety of issues relating to email/newsletter zones, performance, the user interface, and more.

OpenX 2.8 – an even better version of this free ad server software

The advertising market might have taken a hit these months but that doesn’t stop developers improving the advertising software they built so far.
One of these developers is OpenX and they just launched a new version of their popular AND free ad server software: the version 2.8.
We have reviewed this open source ad server software some time ago (when it was at the version 2.4) and we found it pretty compelling and easy to use (the review is here).
Now, with this new release, OpenX is pushing forward to more features like the new plugin framework which allows you to customize OpenX in any way you want (built your own plugins, use third party plugins or have an OpenX consultant do it for you – just like WordPress).
A new feature OpenX introduced was the OpenX Market Plugin which allows you to flow your inventory directly into OpenX Market to maximize your revenue. This Market is now integrated natively in the ad server software.
eCPM was optimized even more and now you can further maximize your advertising revenue by using an entirely new eCPM-based revenue optimization system for ad serving prioritization across your remnant CPM, CPC and CPA campaigns.
The scalability of the software wasn’t forgotten: raw data storage has been overhauled by a re-architected distributed statistics technology (bucket logging) to provide significantly improved scalability and reduced storage requirements.
The OpenX team didn’t forget also the user interface. They have tweaked again to make it even more easier to use.

Manage your Woodpress advertising with Advertising Manager plugin from OpenX

OpenX, famous for the free ad server management software, recently launched a WordPress plugin named Advertising Manager. With this plugin you are able to manage the advertising from Google Adsense and other networks.
The plugin allows you to easily place the ads either within your WordPress blog posts, or within your WordPress theme (manage the ad networks ads inside the WordPress admin console, without the need for consistently modifying HTML, or managing a separate application, when you need to change those ads).
The plugin is in public beta phase now and, of course, it’s free (like everything which comes from OpenX).

Web developers: OpenX, the ad server software company, wants you!

OpenX, the well known open source ad server software company, is looking to hire experienced open source web developers.They have several projects and wants developers with proven experience extending open source content management systems or analytics tools.
One big appeal: the location of the developers doesn’t matter! The work can be done remotely (I don’t know if you will be paid for this so you have to ask).

The OpenX plugins (free ad server) for Drupal, Joomla! and WordPress have arrived!

Because there are many users of these content management and blog systems – Drupal, Joomla! and WordPress – the team behind the free open source ad server solution OpenX started to develop plugins for them.
This will help the users to get the most out of OpenX, ultimately making more money from online advertising.And recently (August 15) the team released those three plugins! Below you have a small description of each of them (according to their blog post).
OpenX for Drupal
The module was developed for Drupal 5.x and 6.x and supports OpenX 2.6 and later (you need to have OpenX installed on your server to take advantage from this module). This is a working protoptype and developers can help improve it. More details here.

Installation
To install and configure the module:
1. Unzip the relevant Zip file (according to which version of drupal you are using) into your Drupal/modules folder.
2. Login to your Drupal admin console and go to Home > Administer > Site building
3. You should now see the OpenX module listed. Enable it
4. You need to setup your zones in Home > Administer > Site configuration > OpenX AdServing
5. If you have an account on the hosted version of OpenX, you only need to put the zone ID’s into the table (you can also give the zones meaningful names here).
6. If you want to serve ads from your existing OpenX installation, expand the “Don’t have a hosted account?” section and enter the delivery URL to your OpenX installation
7. You can then add the blocks to your layout in Home > Administer > Site building > Blocks
They have prepared also a FAQ for you in case you have more questions.
And, of course, you can always get support on their forum.
OpenX for Joomla!
The module (working prototype) was developed for Joomla! version 1.5.x and requires OpenX 2.4 and later (and also the hoted version of OpenX). As in Drupal case, you need to have OpenX installed before taking advantage of this module. More here.

Installation
To install and configure the module:
1. Go to Extensions – Install/Uninstall
2. Upload the Openx module Zip file
3. Go to Extensions – Module manager
4. Find OpenX and click name to open module
5. Enter the delivery URL where you have installed OpenX. If you have set your delivery URL to be different from that of the main installation then place that here. By default the OpenX hosted version is placed here. You need to have an account with OpenX to use this
6. Enter the zone ID which you wish to display in this module
7. Now choose the position in your Joomla! template where you want to display ads
8. Enable the module
9. Your ads should now appear!
To create multiple ads on one page, copy the module and repeat steps 4 – 8.

OpenX for WordPress
Because WordPress is wildly used OpenX had to develop a plugin for this blog system (many times WordPress is seen also as a content management system too).
Like in the above cases the WordPress plugin is a working prototype and developer can contribute to make it better. The plugin supports OpenX 2.4 and later as well as the hosted version of OpenX.

Installation
You need to have OpenX installed before installing this plugin.
To install and configure the plugin:
1. Drop the attached file in the /wp-content/plugins folder of your WordPress installation
2. Enable the plugin in the WordPress administration console.
3. Setup the OpenX server in the OpenX-WP setup page
4. You can now add OpenX banners within your posts using the macro “{openx:NN}” where NN is the OpenX zone ID that you want to display.
5. This plugin also provides a widget which can be added to the WordPress sidebar

These prototypes were designed with simplicity in mind but the team expects, with the developers help, that these plugins to be developed into feature rich integration tools.

OpenX – free open source ad server software solution

OpenX is a free open source ad server software developed in the past years by a devoted open source developer community. Their website is www.openx.org . For now, they have the software as downloadable and installable on your server but they are beta-testing a hosted version of it (so you can use it without being necessary to download and install it).
It was started in 1998 by Tobias Ratschiller, the creator of also popular phpMyAdmin (a MySQL database web administration tool). Scott Switzer continued his work building on Tobias’ code. Today he is the co-founder of OpenX Limited, the company behind the ad server software.
OpenX was known as OpenAds, phpAds, phpAdsNew and MaxMediaManager but finally the company settled down for the OpenX name in 2008. The company which is behind OpenX got two rounds of funding: 5.5 Million dollars in 2006 and 15.5 million dollars in 2008 and this means it will have plenty of cash to improve its product and make it top-notch (not that it’s not already).
Over 30,000 publishers and advertisers around the world uses this ad server software platform to maximize their online advertising results. The current version of OpenX is 2.4 with a 2.5 beta version in the works and now they’ve released the 2.6 version (this review is for 2.4 version mainly).
