bbPress 1.0 Released (Code Name: Bechet)

bbPress, a template-driven PHP/MySQL forum software developed by the creators of WordPress has released bbPress 1.0, which is now available for download.
bbpress 1.0 offers many usability improvements and is now more approachable for people accustomed to the WordPress platform. bbPress 1.0 now has a similar administration interface to WordPress and uses similar descriptions and names where appropriate.
bbPress also behaves more like WordPress when it comes to things like automatically generating your .htaccess file when setting up permalinks.
Here are a few of the key improvements over the 0.9 series:
- “Voices” count on topics reports the number of individuals participating in a conversation.
- Native support for cookie integration (single sign-on) with WordPress 2.7 and 2.8.
- Optional support for memcached object caching.
- Time-zone and Daylight Savings time support.
- A complete XML-RPC publishing API.
- Pingback support – each topic can receive pingbacks, just like a blog post.
- All javascript has been moved to jQuery.
- Optionally allow login via email address as well as username.
- New meta API allows arbitrary meta data to be stored for posts, topics, forums, options, tags or even meta.
- Display names used primarily for user identification display, which allows special characters to be used
- Themes can now have a “functions.php” file, which is automatically loaded.
- Accessibility improvements on forms and in the default theme, including WAI-ARIA roles.
- Major overhaul of the admin interface.
- Optional Akismet statistics page.
- Improved use of posts admin to manage spam.
If you are upgrading from any earlier release to 1.0 then you absolutely should backup all you files and database before doing so. You also may need to make minor adjustments to your templates. Before upgrading, disable all plugins.
bbPress 1.0 is named “Bechet” (pronounced beh-shay) after the pioneering jazz saxophonist Sidney Bechet.

OpenX 2.8 – an even better version of this free ad server software

The advertising market might have taken a hit these months but that doesn’t stop developers improving the advertising software they built so far.
One of these developers is OpenX and they just launched a new version of their popular AND free ad server software: the version 2.8.
We have reviewed this open source ad server software some time ago (when it was at the version 2.4) and we found it pretty compelling and easy to use (the review is here).
Now, with this new release, OpenX is pushing forward to more features like the new plugin framework which allows you to customize OpenX in any way you want (built your own plugins, use third party plugins or have an OpenX consultant do it for you – just like WordPress).
A new feature OpenX introduced was the OpenX Market Plugin which allows you to flow your inventory directly into OpenX Market to maximize your revenue. This Market is now integrated natively in the ad server software.
eCPM was optimized even more and now you can further maximize your advertising revenue by using an entirely new eCPM-based revenue optimization system for ad serving prioritization across your remnant CPM, CPC and CPA campaigns.
The scalability of the software wasn’t forgotten: raw data storage has been overhauled by a re-architected distributed statistics technology (bucket logging) to provide significantly improved scalability and reduced storage requirements.
The OpenX team didn’t forget also the user interface. They have tweaked again to make it even more easier to use.

Manage your Woodpress advertising with Advertising Manager plugin from OpenX

OpenX, famous for the free ad server management software, recently launched a WordPress plugin named Advertising Manager. With this plugin you are able to manage the advertising from Google Adsense and other networks.
The plugin allows you to easily place the ads either within your WordPress blog posts, or within your WordPress theme (manage the ad networks ads inside the WordPress admin console, without the need for consistently modifying HTML, or managing a separate application, when you need to change those ads).
The plugin is in public beta phase now and, of course, it’s free (like everything which comes from OpenX).
