Sep 2, 2009 by Srikanth AD Photo Galleries
Gallery is an open source web based photo album organizer. It’s an effective way to manage photos and seamlessly integrate it into your own website, whether for personal or large community purpose. You can manage as many galleries as you want on your web server, where-in each gallery contains as many photo albums as you desire.
Gallery works with several different image processing tool kits and is available in over 30 languages.
Gallery Requirements
- Platform – UNIX (BSD, Linux, …) or Windows.
- Webserver – Apache, Microsoft IIS, Zeus etc.,
- PHP – PHP version 4.3.0 or greater (Gallery 1.x requires PHP 4.1.0 or greater), PHP safe_mode must be turned off.
- Image Processing Library – In order to automatically generate thumbnails and re-sized versions of your photos, Gallery requires either ImageMagick or NetPBM.
- Database (Gallery 2 only) – MySQL 3.x, 4.x or 5.x, PostgreSQL 7.x or 8.x, Oracle 9i or 10g, DB2 8.2, MS SQL Server 2005.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Here, I’m test installing Gallery on localhost using XAMPP (an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use – just download, extract and start). Before proceeding, you need to create a new MySQL database for Gallery using your preferred database administration tool like phpMyAdmin.

Nov 4, 2008 by Mircea Goia MyTestBox News
WordPress blog software evolves steadily and now it reached the version 2.7. This is the first beta 1 release to the public. What it brings new?
According to ther blog it brings a new visual design mainly.
But also it features new additions like:
- the posibility to respond to comments from the admin area,
- automatic upgrade,
- plugin/browser installer,
- drag and drop dashboard,
- navigation expand/colaps,
- comment threading and paging,
- quick inline editing,
- add media without creating post,
- XMLRPC comments API,
- HTTPOnly Cookies,
- upgrades and installs over secure FTP,
- bulk editing of posts
- others
The most popular changes seem to be the new design/layout (looks good indeed), the automatic upgrade (pretty handy feature) and the revised dashboard (according to their poll).
This Beta version works well with Firefox and Safari although it’s not yet finished but the team is working also on making IE and Opera compatible.
The final release was intended to be unleashed into the wild on 10th of November but it seems that is not possible so the team is pushing the date with two weeks.
In the meantime, they’ll release a RC candidate (release candidate) which will be pretty much good for production use.
Go and try out the new WordPress blog software! Dowload WordPress 2.7 Beta 1 here.
Another announcement the company did is the launch of WordPress Showcase, a display of some of the best and brightest WordPress users, who are using it to do a whole lot more than blog.
You can make a suggestion and the team will check that out and put it on Showcase if they think the site deserves it.
We have reviewed WordPress in the past. Take a look at it.

ZenCart – open source professional ecommerce software solution review
Sep 1, 2008 by Veiko Herne E-commerce
Zen Cart (or ZenCart) www.zencart.com has been developed by group of professionals from Newcastle, England, Cleveland, Ohio and Ontario, Canada. It’s not a simple shopping cart module, but truly professional ecommerce store management platform (named also a shopping cart system) with newsletters, coupons, gift certificates, etc more capable to run Amazon type of stores than small websites with thousands of products allowing unlimited category depth and site search.
Even if Zen Cart comes with one standard outlook, there is several free sites and commercial stores (algozone.com, zen-cart-templates.ichoze.net, zencarttemplates.info, www.templatemonster.com/zencart-templates.php, themestock.com) available to give your store a custom outlook.
Installation and store setup
ZenCart shopping cart installation went smoothly, however the system complaint again several PHP setting parameters like register_globals=on (had to create separate php.ini for those), and even I didn’t had secure server protocol purchased to my hosting account, I was able to complete the installation with some simple steps.
There were eight editable pages from the administration module to customize the site layout using pure HTML language or JavaScript based Rich text editor, the side box content can be set on and off and their sort order can be modified. The software which I installed was with “Contemporary Classic Green” and English language but additional templates and languages can be purchased and downloaded.
The administration module is extremely broad and from first look, I was little bit confused where to start.Defining the products should be most reasonable step to start and as those are belonging to categories, those should be defined first. For SEO purposes, you are able to define your own Meta tags (title, keywords and description) for the category and build category tree structure.

Introducing GeoClassifieds – Build Your Own Online Classifieds Website
Apr 8, 2008 by Heather Williamson Classifieds Ads
Have you ever dreamed of owning your own online classified ads website? Using GeoClassifieds, the online classifieds software solution, you can get yourself started for no money out of your pocket, and easily continue to add useful features as your business does.
GeoClassifieds was developed by Geodesic Solutions as part of their core product line. The business and IP professionals of Geodesic Software opened their doors in Dallas, Texas in 2001 and been delivering a variety of classified and auction software to a wide variety of international clients.
What does my server require?
GeoDesic Solutions creates 4 versions of their GeoClassifieds software. They have a Lite (free), Basic, Professional, and Enterprise version. No matter which version of GeoClassifeds you chose to install, you must have the following basic services on your Web host:
GeoClassifieds is compatible with any popular browser from Internet Explorer to Safari. Users may want to have a high speed Internet connection, simply because the nature of classified ad software implies the use of a lot of small and large images associated with selling individual items.
Can My Server Install GeoClassifieds For Me?
Many web hosting providers use control panel software to allow the automatic installation of a preset list of programs. GeoDesic is not currently announcing an affiliation with any of these control panel developers, so you may not find it listed in your control panel. Because of the time involved in installing and configuring a PHP application on a Linux server, you may want to check your hosts control panel first. Most of them can be accessed through a Web Applications or Add New Application link on your control panel’s home page.
