FluxBB 1.2.22 – open source web forum software released
Sep 2, 2009 by Mircea Goia MyTestBox News
Although I haven’t heard about this forum software before it seems it’s a good alternative to phpBB or vBulletin .
FluxBB is a fork of PunBB, which is another forum software sold to a commercial company.
The developers just announced a new stable version of FluxBB: 1.2.22
This new version fixes a critical XSS vulnerability from the previous version, along other small fixes. Soon, the team will release the new major version 1.4, which now is in the beta testing.
FluxBB is a PHP/MySQL forum software and, of course, it’s open source (GNU). FluxBB was designed to be fast and light with less of the “not so essential” features that some of the other forums have.
Download the stable version and the beta version here.

Gallery, Open Source Web Based Photo Album Organizer – Review
Sep 2, 2009 by Srikanth AD Photo Galleries
Gallery is an open source web based photo album organizer. It’s an effective way to manage photos and seamlessly integrate it into your own website, whether for personal or large community purpose. You can manage as many galleries as you want on your web server, where-in each gallery contains as many photo albums as you desire.
Gallery works with several different image processing tool kits and is available in over 30 languages.
Gallery Requirements
- Platform – UNIX (BSD, Linux, …) or Windows.
- Webserver – Apache, Microsoft IIS, Zeus etc.,
- PHP – PHP version 4.3.0 or greater (Gallery 1.x requires PHP 4.1.0 or greater), PHP safe_mode must be turned off.
- Image Processing Library – In order to automatically generate thumbnails and re-sized versions of your photos, Gallery requires either ImageMagick or NetPBM.
- Database (Gallery 2 only) – MySQL 3.x, 4.x or 5.x, PostgreSQL 7.x or 8.x, Oracle 9i or 10g, DB2 8.2, MS SQL Server 2005.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Here, I’m test installing Gallery on localhost using XAMPP (an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use – just download, extract and start). Before proceeding, you need to create a new MySQL database for Gallery using your preferred database administration tool like phpMyAdmin.

AxCMS.net, the free enterprise web content management system, now at version 8.5
Mar 12, 2009 by Mircea Goia MyTestBox News
If Zimplit was one of the simplest content management systems (see the next post below) around and it’s open-source PHP based, AxCMS.net isn’t among the simplest and is not open-source based.
But is has one thing in common with Zimplit: it’s free.
AxCMS.net is Microsoft .NET technology based and you would expect to cost some money. Well, it’s not.
Since 2001 it had 8 major releases and now it’s at the version 8.5, Axinom being the developer and providing also the funding.
This version has many improvements (like any new software release):
# Multilanguage: new languages can be easily added by the editor
# Multilanguage: improved user interface for translations
# Export and import of page contents, categories and user profiles in XML
# New and improved interactive controls with Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash
# Newsletter service: bounce-management, attachments, parallel HTML- and „Plain Text“
# Tracking / reporting: track (user-)individual links specifically to evaluate click rates.
For developers:
# Extended and improved online documentation: http://en.help.axcms.net
# AxCMS.net service for implementing Asynchronous Business Processes
# Custom logging: trace any actions with contextual meta-information
# Search and indexing is now possible in “custom fields”
# Lists can now be adapted to meet individual needs (filters, columns, “bulk operations”)
According to Axinom, AxCMS.net web content management system is a high end solution, for websites in a price range of 5.000 to 500.000 USD…which, basically, rules out the part time web developer used to built websites in WordPress.
Axinom, the company, has offices in UK, Germany (the headquarter), Estonia (the developers playground), Switzerland (the money vault) and, of course, USA.
It has a worldwide network of partners (plannig to have over 200 this year) and it is Microsoft Gold Certified Partner and International Microsoft Vendor.
You can signup for a demo acount on their website.

How Bluehost.com web hosting company destroys their hard earned reputation!
Mar 6, 2009 by Mircea Goia MyTestBox News, Web Hosting
Yes, our website MyTestbox.com was down for several days starting with the last weekend and lasting until day before yesterday.
As you have already seen, we went through a major overhaul of our site design. We got many reviews of our last design that it was nice and elegant but too dark for long reading.
Well, we listened to the reviews and changed for the better.
However, this change wasn’t without pain… And this “thanks” is to our webhosting company, Bluehost.com. I have chosen Bluehost (it was my responsibility – I didn’t know I was going to regret that) after researching offers and reviews for several hosting providers. Our site is not that big in terms of storage and traffic demands (at least, for now) so I wanted to get a good offer with a fair price (we were looking, basically, for a shared account for now). From among hundreds of companies in this field I have selected a few (of course, I have researched all of them). Goddady, Dreamhost, Lunarpages, Hostway, Hostgator were among the frontrunners but in the end I settled down for Bluehost.com.
Good offering, good price and, as I read and then experienced, good customer service.
One big drawback though: from among many reviews almost nobody mentioned about their backup policy. Thinking it’s pretty solid I went with them and signed for one year (on their features page they say “Courtesy Site Backups” but they don’t tell how often they are doing this “courtesy”).
For several months all went fine. Site was up, handled traffic quite well. Then all the hell broke loose: the site could not connect to the database (we use MySQL database for the backend, the front end being the well-known web software WordPress).
I found out the Bluehost’s database server was down. I called them and they, curteously, explained that they had a problem with their database system and they have to reset it, which means restoring from a backup.
1-2 weeks old backups??
But guess what? Their backup happened to be one week old! And thus I lost several posts. Ok, I wrote them back (one thing I dislike the most is repeating the efforts of what has already been done). I just finshed those articles (took me 2-3 days because I have other things to do too) and guess what? Bluehost’s database went cuckoo again. So I lost AGAIN what I have just wrote! No wonder, they had, yet AGAIN, a backup one week old. Yes, I know, I should have my backup too. I understand that. But not always you can have the latest nor have time to have the latest. So I learned my lesson and I installed a backup plugin for the WordPress database which does a daily backup and it’s kept on the server and I download it from time to time on my computer.
Now, other months went by…and we decided to change the site’s design. Last week we did that and then we started to put back stuff we had before also upgrading WordPress (and configuring). Again, we just finished and this time the Bluehost’s web server went to meet its Creator. In other words, it died. And because we did work directly on the server (yeah, silly again) no backups were made.
When it was time to recover the files Bluehost said “We are sorry, the backup we have is two weeks old…“. Their apologies didn’t help me much. We had to re-do ALL what we have done previously. Which meant another week lost.
Now, I asked them and I ask you too: is it normal that a web hosting company over 10 years old to have this one or two weeks backup policy??
I mean there are many other companies which have daily backups (but not better offers) and even we had to pay we would had paid to recover our files. They didn’t even have that (a paid backup policy).
“We do a courtesy backup for our clients…” they said. Courtesy backup?? Paying customers are relying on the hosting company to take care of their site, aren’t they? Especially when the things are going awry. They would be happy to pay 2-3 dollars more just to have peace of mind. In today’s world sites are not static anymore like they were 10 years ago. The content is changing quite often and that needs to be backed up often. I guess they are still stuck in yesterday’s era with their backup policy. I understand backing up so many files on a server takes some time. But other companies do it — they can do it too (doesn’t hurt to ask others.)
Godaddy to the rescue
So, after hours of mumblings we switched to Godaddy (I have the domain with Godaddy and I didn’t want to have all the eggs in the same basket – but it seems now I do). Goddady is based in the same city I am, so at least they are local (not to mention they are the world’s biggest domain reseller).
Godaddy had a good offer of their version of just introduced cloud hosting called “Grid Hosting” which resembles somehow with Amazon S3, MediaTemple, Mosso or Joyent offers.
So far we are happy, the site seems to respond faster than on Bluehost…but it’s to early to tell more. Hopefully, they’ll do better and yes, they have a daily backup policy (thank you very much!).
One goal of MyTestBox is to present reviews and opinions about hosting companies too (they are hosting many of the web software we are or will review) besides web software reviews and news from the industry.
If you want to tell us your opinions/feedback about other web hosting companies you are welcome to write articles as guest authors and send them to us.
Soon we can give access to people to register and post articles in our activity field.
Update
It seems the CEO of Bluehost, Matt Heaton, found a method to make the backups more faster (and thus more often) by “dumping the name of any file that was created/modified (any bytes written) at the time the file was modified and use that as a list of files to back up“.
Hopefully, they will implement this ASAP because what happened to me did happen to others too and that is a “blue” spot on the company’s cheek.

Anyone who wants to register new domain name with thei TXP plan has to pay only $8.95 for web address under COM, NET, ORG, INFO, BIZ, US or WS extensions.

Dimdim, the web meeting software, released the version 4.0 with new features which will please the users
Aug 12, 2008 by Melissa Worcester MyTestBox News
There are over 50 new features in the latest version of Dimdim, the web meeting software. This open-source web program has always been about letting you host an online meeting where the attendees won’t need to download anything. It has a free version allowing meetings with up to 20 people, and also pro (100 people, custom branding, for $99 a year) and enterprise versions (1000 people, more than one meeting happening simultaneously, $1999 annually).
With this software you can use your computer and webcam to chat, talk, show slides, and share whatever’s on your computer’s desktop with colleagues and co-workers all over the world. It works on Macs and Linux machines as well as Windows. The makers are hoping businesses will take advantage of their service as a way to beat the high cost of sending employees on out-of-town trips.
The new features are too numerous to list. They are based on feedback from Dimdim users.
Here are the highlights:
- Recording – Record your meeting, then share the link in the same way you share the latest YouTube video, via link or embedded on your website. Now those who miss your meeting won’t have an excuse for not knowing what was covered.
- Multiple presenters – Give any of those in attendance the ability to share their desktop or a presentation, or use the whiteboard or broadcast via webcam. Easy to do at a click of your mouse button.
- Teleconferencing – Dimdim uses VoIP technology, so you can use it to make conference calls anytime, with unlimited calling time for free. Or users can dial-in to a meeting via a traditional phone.
- Private meetings – Only those who know your meeting room name and have a special meeting key can attend meetings you designate to be private. There is also a lobby feature where those who want to attend can gather, allowing the host to admit them individually. These features make Dimdim more secure than before.
- Mac desktop sharing – apparently this feature wasn’t available to Mac users in previous versions, but it is now.
- Easier to use – The new menu system and streamlined user interface makes many tasks quick and intuitive. Private chat, inviting others to an on-going meeting, rejoining a meeting if your connection is lost – all of these are accomplished with one or two clicks.
- Notification panel – This area alerts the host about important tasks such as admitting new arrivals from the lobby.
- Questions from participants – Dimdim already had a “mood” indicator, but they’ve added “Question” as one of the choices so users can quickly let the host know if they want to ask something.
- Hide Participants – As the host, you can choose whether participants can see a list of the other attendees. If you want to hold an open sales meeting and don’t want the attendees to know how many participants are there, or you need to keep their identities private, this feature is perfect for you.
- 2-way video chat – You can allow participants to share video from their webcams in the pro and enterprise versions of Dimdim, if users have the video chat option turned on.
- Still no install – The makers of Dimdim want you to know that you don’t have to install anything to attend or to host a meeting – unless you want to be able to share your desktop with those at the meeting. That feature requires their screencasting plug-in. All other features, including the new ones, are available right from their site. All you need to do is sign up.
You can download the free version here
